Thompson Vineyard is dedicated to the stewardship of land whereby its truest expression is experienced through the yield of our collective efforts.

Within the renowned Alisos Canyon corridor, 42 acres of cool-climate Rhone varietals sit naked on their own rootstock for the purest expression of nature’s brushstrokes.  Since 1990 Thompson’s elegant style has been distinguished by an exquisite balance of power and finesse.

The vineyard forms the foundation for some of the world’s most lauded artisan winemakers’ highest acclaimed offerings and maintains a proven reputation as one of the premier sources of ultra-premium Syrah in the United States and abroad.

About the Proprietors

Our history

  • 1984
    The Thompson family purchases nearly 900 beautiful acres of Central California coastal land on Alisos Canyon Road, about 40 minutes north of Santa Barbara and three miles southeast of the historic town of Los Alamos.
  • 1990
    David Thompson and Jeff Newton carefully select 42 acres of well-drained south facing soil and plant the Thompson Vineyard, bravely electing to use the vine’s own rootstock to preserve the purest unadulterated expression of its fruit.
  • 1994
    The first vintage of Thompson fruit is bottled.  Master winemakers Adam Tolmach (Ojai Vineyard) and Craig Jaffurs (Jaffurs Wine Cellars) are among the first to lash their own legacies to the mast of this promising new vineyard.
  • 1995-2013
    As critical acclaim surges and winemakers achieve consistently outstanding results with Thompson’s elegant cool-climate Northern Rhone style, the vineyard builds a reputation as one of the most sought-after sources of exceptional syrah in the U.S. and internationally.
  • 2014
    After 30 years at the helm the Thompson family decides the time is right to pass the torch to a new family who can both maintain and improve upon the  vineyard’s traditions of excellence.  Noah and Tamara Rowles graciously accept the challenge and are now humbled and honored to call this inimitable slice of earth their home.
