The 2008 Syrah Thompson Vineyard makes a fascinating contrast to the Terra Bella. Black pepper, leather, spices, violets and white flowers are some of the notes that emerge from the Thompson Vineyard. It shows the freshness and tannic spine of a cold-weather Syrah but with more than enough fruit to provide balance. A long finish rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. One of my favorite Central Coast sites is the Santa Barbara vineyard in the Alisos Canyon known as the Thompson Vineyard and made famous by Ojai’s Adam Tolmach. Fermented with 65% whole clusters, the 2004 Syrah Thompson Vineyard (125 cases produced) offers a dense purple color as well as beautiful aromas of chocolate, ground pepper, blackberries, flowers, and road tar. It is an intense yet impressively well-balanced Syrah that should drink well for 7-8 years. (RP – 12/2006)

The 2002 The Table (100% Syrah from the Thompson Vineyard) represents the current rendition of the marvelous 2001 The Dreaming Detective. There are 188 cases of thick, juicy The Table. Its inky/ruby/purple color is accompanied by a big, floral bouquet revealing notes of creme de cassis, blackberries, and cherries, medium to full body, sweet tannin, an unctuous texture, and a long, heady finish. More open-knit than The Fight, this beauty should drink well for 10-12 years.

This is quite a luscious Syrah, soft, smooth, complex and layered, showing qualities of both warm and cool climates. From the cool end of the spectrum comes a lively acidity and not a trace of over-ripeness. The riper notes of blackberries, cassis, gingersnap cookie and licorice are delicious, enriched by smoky oak. Drink now and for a few years. Wine Enthusiast – November 2007

Deeply draughted and solidly varietal with a wealth of blackberry fruit and lovely oak showing at all points, this big, but keenly crafted Syrah is wonderfully layered and exceptionally balanced all at once.

Scents of white pepper and smoked meat combine with a lot of fresh herb character in this bright, young Syrah. The dark, meaty fruit lasts along with all the spice. For Provencal roast lamb.
